Trekking

An adventurous trek in the Tuscan outdoors is an unforgettable experience in this historically rich area, where nature lives in perfect harmony with mankind and hidden monuments testify a past still surprisingly present. Walking along country lanes, passing through forests and following the ancient pilgrim route of the via Francigena is a unique way of bringing back something different, that reminds us of our stay in Tuscany and that evades the busy art cities and the well-trodden tourist routes.

Things to bring on treks:

  • Comfortable shoes adequate for trekking (preferably above the ankle)
  • Comfortable clothes, best in layers
  • A hat, sun cream and sun glasses
  • A small backpack (try to keep light)
  • A bottle of water
  • A raincoat (in case of bad weather)
  • A camera

In case of bad weather or if the guide thinks it necessary, the trek will be moved to another day. You will have a choice to either go on a different activity or be refunded.

Treks are either
Half day, 3-4 hours
Full day, 7-8 hours with lunch break/pic-nic.

Certain itineraries are more advisable than others according to the season in which you wish to take the trek. Some areas, for example, have very little shade and are less advisable during the hottest months of summer, while other areas are too muddy during periods of prolonged rains.

On all excursions you will be accompanied by an experienced and authorized nature guide who will bring you to visit places of naturalistic and historic interest.
With at least a week notice it is possible to organize personalized itineraries.

The difficulty level of the trek will vary according to your degree of preparation, which we recommend you tell us about together with your chosen area for the trek.

You will meet your guide directly at the departure point for your trek. We will provide adequate directions for finding the place. Or alternatively, on request, we can organize round trip transportation for you as well.

Val di Merse, a very evocative region for the continuity and extension of its forests, interrupted only by the ancient walled villages like Brenna, Orgia, Torri, Stigliano and by fortifications like the tower of Montarrenti or by isolated churches like the Hermitage of Santa Lucia or the abandoned ‘lost Duomo’ of Montespecchio. The wealth of this area derived from its many waterways, in particular the Merse river which became the centre for the milling of cereals thanks to its many water mills. Val di Farma. The wild valley of the Farma river, between Monticiano and Roccastrada was since the middle ages, an important centre for iron mining. Tuscan Earth

To walk untiringly among vines and olive trees
as the sun romances your thoughts
and projects on the beaten earth
the elusive shadows of your desires.
To climb sweet hills and to feel amazement
at the color of a flower,
at the vivid lightning-like flash of a butterfly,
while the wind brings you, delicately,
the first leaves, like love letters
written by an unknown lover.
To hear the trees murmur their songs
made of green, of blades of sunshine
to sit down on a boulder and to feel
that you are no longer flesh and bone,
but a clump of earth, vines, grass and wild flowers
that you are the countryside and the sweet water
in the stream that runs among the brambles.
